Castlevania was directed by Hitoshi Akamatsu. Hitoshi and his team were huge fans of films and designed Castlevania to resemble some of their favorite classic horror movies. It worked because Castlevania was a worldwide success and paved the way for a sequel. Castlevania 2 Simon’s Quest was changed to a non-linear open world approach and added NPC interactions similar to The Adventure of Link.
The sequel was inspired by another Konami game called Maze of Galious released for the MSX. After the game was released, it would be met with a public controversy over the second issue of Nintendo Power. Parents claimed the cover gave their kids nightmares due to the severed head of Dracula that was being held by Simon Belmont.
Castlevania 3 would be the final NES game and would return to the platform action style that Castlevania 1 was known for. Castlevania 2 Simon’s Quest would be the inspiration behind the critically acclaimed Castlevania Symphony of the Night for Playstation 1.
